Mulund, 5 (Informer): A one-year-old baby was successfully operated on for Nasal Meningoencephalocele, a rare disease, in Mulund. Due to the tireless efforts of the doctors of the ENT department at Fortis Hospital, the baby has been cured of this disease.
A one-year-old boy here had a rare disease called ‘Nasal Meningoencephalocele’. On May 8, the patient was brought to the emergency department of the hospital after blood and clear fluid started coming out of the nose. In this, the defect in the skull protrudes into the nose. (partial leakage of brain matter due to defect in the base of the skull) is a rare condition occurring in only one in a million individuals.
At this time, after the patient was admitted to the emergency department, the hospital’s clinical team decided to perform an MRI and CT scan to determine the direction of further treatment. After these tests, the patient was found to have a rare birth defect, in which the nasal bones, which connect to the brain, were finely split. As this was a birth defect, and due to an injury from a fall earlier in the year, a small part of his brain had entered his nose.
On examination, the patient was diagnosed with ‘Nasal Meningoencephalocele’. The multidisciplinary team here performed the surgery. Dr. in the team. Reaction:
During the surgery we successfully removed the part of the brain that had landed in the patient’s nose. We closed the cracks in the nasal bone to prevent this from happening again. Post-operatively, the patient was shifted to the ward, where he was provided with complete post-operative care. Over the next few days, the patient’s health improved considerably.
